    Mining company operates sans permit
    The Jakarta Post | Thu, 11/25/2010 10:00 AM | The Archipelago A | A | A |
MEDAN, North Sumatra: A mining company in North Sumatra reportedly does not have an Environmental Impact Analysis (Amdal) permit.

North Sumatra Energy and Mining Office head Untungta Kaban said PT Sorikmas Mining, which operates in Mandailing Natal regency, had not applied for an Amdal permit, although it has already been operating there for a long time.

The majority of PT Sorikmas Minings shares are owned by an Australian company.

What I know is that the company does not have an Amdal permit. It is currently carrying out explorations, Untungta said on Tuesday.

Local residents have held repeated rallies over this issue, and have accused the company of damaging Batang Gadis National Park.

In the latest rally on Monday, protesters urged the government to review the companys contract to work in Mandailing Natal. JP

Understand this has been a long term issue (check previous Google searches) and generally these things in Indonesia are only ever likely to come to a head when income producing mining starts.
