@Sidonicus1; in 2018 my wife and I flew with Qantas to the USA from Melbourne via Hawaii.
Our flight involved travelling from Melbourne to Sydney for the leg to Honolulu. It was cancelled about two hours before it was due to leave - we were notified via a SMS and faced the cancellation of our overseas holiday as a consequence.
When we contacted Qantas we were told the only flight available was leaving in fifty minutes and we were offered the change if we could make it - we did so with minutes to spare since our son was able to drop us off at the terminal entry.
That was the second and last time we accepted that sort of treatment from Qantas - we now fly Singapore Airlines wherever possible.
