Yeah you would have probably killed it with kindness
Seriously they are easy to care for and they can recover from a bit of neglect, don't over water or over feed them, a banana skin or two a week is enough to feed them but one or two more would not hurt them.
Good sheltered position should be fine but you can move it if it looks like it's suffering
