Substandard and inconsistent chemical composition throughout a lithium battery can easily develope hot spots that can overheat and start fires. Chinese electrical components are also known to be substandard in quality often not meeting specs so who knows if the battery management systems for each cell are also up to specs. No wonder so many fires. Nickel matt might be ok in theory, but in the real world, who knows??
