An interesting point about the "rock destruction" theory cpb - if what you said was true and gas can only escape from the rock while it is being drilled then the only way to get gas from a reservoir would be using open pit mining and crushers to "crush" the gas out of the rock. Last time I checked they were putting down one well every 200m - 2km and the gas diffused through rocks into the well.
