Israeli soldiers and police have begun moving in to evacuate two Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

The evacuation of Homesh and Sanur is the final phase of Israel's pullout plan from the Gaza Strip and part of the West Bank.

In Sanur, an Army bulldozer has smashed down the main gates to let security forces in.

Inside, settlers and protesters have barricaded themselves inside their homes and a large art gallery in the centre of the community.

Police fear they have stockpiled fragmentation grenades and dozens of firearms.

The chief of the Israeli Army, Lieutenant General Dan Halutz, says he expects the evacuation of the two settlements to be more difficult than the Gaza pullout.

As well as the settlers, the security forces will have to evict more than 2,000 protesters who have come to the settlement to try to stop the pullout.
