For the past 50 odd years we have been told “time is running out” for us to eliminate harmful emissions. The World was told in 1972 (Limits to Growth Report) that most natural resources would run out in a few decades and in the same year, at Stockholm, the Organiser (later with the UN) said we had 10 years to avoid catastrophe . Both spectacularly wrong.! In 1982 the UN predicted “devastation as complete and irreversible as a nuclear holocaust”. In 1989 the UN gave us 3 years to win/lose the struggle. Spectacularly wrong again.!! A newspaper in Britain said in 2004 that “without drastic action civilisation would be destroyed by 2020. Eminent scientist Prince Charles weighed in (about 2008) saying he had calculated that we had 96 months to save the World, then again in 2018 “We have just 18 months left to fix climate change”. Both seriously wrong.!!
Despite 50 years of wrong predictions the media and politicians still talk of imminent apocalypse, causing eco-anxiety for many, particularly young people.
The push towards renewables, green hydrogen and electric vehicles is commendable and must be supported, but we need to include nuclear and realise that we are giving China a further commercial advantage because it will be using hydrocarbons (cheap power) for at least another 5 decades.!!
