Erm.... it's just a shortening of "newbie" and has been around 20-30 yrs. Yes, 'lol' is in Merriam Webster, as well as the Oxford & Cambridge dictionaries. Commonly used words are added every year to these dictionaries because the English language is constantly evolving.
