Also (I'm not from NSW so had to google this), you can already use your phone or device to pay on NSW public transport with a linked debit or credit card in your virtual wallet.

So whislt the trial seems very promising, I'm wondering on the benefits of using a prepaid virtual Opal Card over an existing debit or credit card loaded onto your mobile phone/device?

Tourists would be one main user. And perhaps people who weren't comfortable having a debit or credit card loaded onto their mobile phone/device (ie- for security reasons), and may prefer a prepaid virtual card instead (with a limited balance).
