From experience, it's actually a hell of a lot easier to eat vegetarian when in a country full of vegetarians. I did so in India for 3 months but fell back in to old habits when I came back to Australia.
Meat is addictive, it's pretty hard to give up an addiction when you're surrounded by people partaking in the addictive activity.
Not sure you would see that from the top of your perfectly principled high horse though.
