History is littered with wars over salt, even the English less than 100 years ago machine-gunned 200 indians who wanted the freedom to make salt.
There is a myth that the Romans salted Carthage so that they wouldn't have to go to war with them again, after over 100 years of hostilities.
The Perugians refused to pay the salt tax to the pope, so he buried part of their town and built a fortress over it. What a christian action!
But best of all is this saying I saw in a bar in Rome, translated as:
"If sh*t ever becomes precious, the government will put a tax on all ar*holes". Good chance this will apply to salt.
So, watch out.
