Yep. We could do all that.
We have plenty of uranium. We could spend decades developing and building a nuclear industry before we generate any electricity at all. That's if we could find anywhere to build a baseload nuclear power station that simply can't compete with renewables anyway.
Trouble is, we'd get pretty cold and hungry waiting for it to happen.
Gas for electricity ? Crazy, crazy expensive. That's why we have gas fired peakers. They are only economical if they are used infrequently.
The crazy increase in power prices on the east coast several years ago ? All because of gas. Hazelwood closed down putting more of a reliance on gas fired power , especially for South Australia, and we are still penalised by it today.
Shale oil ? Still quite expensive. Especially in Australia because of it's remote location. And there's the environmental hurdles to jump over.
Coal ? Yep. We have plenty of that . Have you heard about this whole man made climate change thingy ? The thing about all the CO2 in the atmosphere causing global warming, seal level rises, more extreme weather etc ?
Of course we could do all those things.
Or.........we continue on the path to renewable energy. Australia just ticked over 30% from renewables last year. Up from 24% the year before. Widely expected to hit over 50% by 2030. 8 years away. SA well over 60% in a few short years. Easily 100% by 2030.
GWs of renewable energy projects are actually under way today.
Not being talked about like nuclear or shale oil.
Actually being executed today. Along with facilities for green hydrogen for export in every state . At the same time we have green energy being built to power the mining industry and things like smelters and heavy haulage. Another thing that is actually real and happening now.
So, while there are all these other wonderful ideas, like nuclear fusion, it is renewables that are already providing the solution and getting the job done.
Australia energy independant in a decade ? With nuclear ? No way .
With shale oil ? Pfffttt.
