(EnergyAsia, November 14 2011, Monday) --- Australia’s Linc Energy said it plans to launch a trial underground coal gasification (UCG) project in Vietnam and has submitted an application to do the same in the US.

Linc Energy said it has signed a cooperation contract with state-owned Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group, or Vinacomin,, and Japanese trading house Marubeni Corporation to undertake a trial project in the Red River Delta region in Vietnam.


The partners have agreed to proceed with civil works contracts for stage one of the trial project located about 60 km south-east of Hanoi to prove that coal in the region is suitable for gasification using the Australian firm’s technology.

Separately, Linc Energy said it has applied to build an underground coal gasification demonstration plant in Wyoming state’s Powder River Basin, in which it has rights to develop coal deposits in about 745 sq km of acreage.

Based on data collected and analysed over 16 months, company said it submitted the permit application to the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality, with the approvals process to take around 180 days.

CEO Peter Bond said: “This is not just important for our US customer base, but the success of Gasifier 6 in Wyoming will have a multiplier effect across whole regions and countries that will see this as just one more reason to adopt UCG into their energy platform.
