Renesas are most likely planning to doing keyword spotting or some other audio processing application with the 2 node license IMO.
If I recall correctly, a year or two ago LDN said they were promoting image and audio applications to their potential customers.
Audio makes the most sense out of the two IMO because image recognition would be quite slow due to the much larger amount of data to process in an image.
Go back to the Auto Summit presentation to see how many nodes were used for facial recognition vs audio keyword spotting vs detecting if someone is here. It was 13 nodes (50 NPUs) for facial recognition, 1.75 nodes (7 NPUs) for KWS, plus 3.5 nodes (14 NPUs) for detecting if someone was here.
Each of these systems produced fairly quick results. So what Renesas uses it for will obviously depend on the application they're targeting. If it's for a high end automotive application I would presume audio / KWS to be a reasonable application as this provides a quick response.
2 nodes could still be useful in an image processing application but I would suspect it's too few nodes for face identification. Consumers might get frustrated waiting that long for Akida to identify them. However, 2 nodes could be sufficient to detect if someone is approaching a vehicle and possibly even if it's the owner, because this takes multiple seconds.
There's a huge range of use cases where 2 nodes could be sufficient so it helps to keep an open mind. For example, with 2 nodes Akida could probably process audio of car tyre noises to determine tyre health, it could listen to engine sounds and determine engine health, it could listen to wheel bearings...
Akida can still process large machine models with 2 nodes, it will just be slower in analysing it. If you're analysing engine health, do you need to be constantly checking the sensor output multiple times a second? Or is it sufficient to only analyse it say every 10 seconds or when values are outside of a specified range? How you set it up will affect what is acceptable.
As FF said there are other senses (smell, touch / vibration, taste, radar, Lidar, infrared...) and these all could have their own applications where higher latency (and hence 2 nodes) is acceptable.
Pure speculation, DYOR
