An Individual will treat the guy next door as a friend but if fed propoganda from a leader that the neigbour is only worth the value of his gold teeth and others agree then eventually his opinion will change.

Sort of how the stock market works to many stocks valued based on group opinion (media) rather than an individual analysing actual attributes.
