    chinggis is a really important symbol of identify for the mongolians and i don't blame them for reviving his memory post soviet rule. though there is something notable about the statue - it has a similarity to the style of many of the statues the russian soviets erected around their territory

    here is one from Kazakhstan. these sort of gross statues were scattered all over almaty.

    they chose a different style for their connection to chinggis and it seems much less soviet inspired.

    then when they moved the capital they went right out on a limb and went to the other key part of their heritage - the golden man as a representative of the Saka warriors (i think related to the scythians who are well worth reading about)

    post soviet era the leader of turkmenistan - turkmanbashy the great may his name be..... as they were required to say - were erected around ashgabat.. he preferred gold plate. there are a few stories of his idiosyncrasies if you like to call them that
