Holiday push to say we're sorry
By David Wilson and Ian Haberfield
December 14, 2003
VICTORIAN workers may gain an extra public holiday to say sorry to Aborigines and to celebrate reconciliation.
Key unionists and the dominant Left wing of the Labor Party are lobbying the State Government to add an additional public holiday to the existing 11.
Trades Hall Council secretary Leigh Hubbard said a "sorry day" public holiday would be a day to recognise the rights of indigenous people.
"In the United States, they have a public holiday to remember Martin Luther King, who did so much for black rights," he said.
Cabinet is to consider the "say sorry" day proposal and a spokeswoman for Aboriginal Affairs Minister Gavin Jennings said the Bracks Government was committed to reconciliation and recognition for indigenous people
