In the US under FED regulation T and SEC Rule 15c3-3 a prime broker may re-hypothecate assets to the value of 140% of the client’s liability to the prime broker. But in the UK there is no limit to the amount that can be re-hypothecated so ALL of a clients assets may disappear. Eg MF Global UK limited.
So the question is for early next week, which Australian institutions have significant shareholdings by Royal Bank of Canada or the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce?
