Amazon and SpaceX are already fighting over orbital space, and it's only going to get worse over time. These constellations are all going to require space-to-space backhaul capacity, and even more critically will high capacity ground connection to service providers. Once the microwave band is saturated laser capability will become a pivotal technology.
