open cut mining was stopped when the cryolite pod ended in high grade quartz, the cryolite was taken from the bottom of the pit via an access tunnel (or adit) .cost of production could be done in a study done when the pit is emptied, but some idea of relative costs could be derived even today from the previous 150 years of mining history. after all much is already established with plenty of drill holes a shape of the body known some idea of costing could be done even now
