Perhaps a better anology rather than pragmatic Vs perfection approach is the engineer Vs the accountant. The engineer (with the geo is this case) is always "supremely" confident, they also just want to get in and get the job done. I say this coming from a mechanical engineering background (not O&G and no longer work in that area). The bean counter perhaps from a financial background will always be more cautious being scared of losing more pennies unneccessarily.

Another point worth noting is much has been made that the company stated road was complete. However believe the actual words used were "nearing" completion. One could argue there was quite a chunk of time until actual completion, but leave that for another day! :-D
