There are three Queensland coal-fired power stations with CCS technology with a potential generation capacity of 1,100MW at a planning stage. The 80MW Zerogen pilot project includes CCS technology and plans a 300MW CCS plant in the second stage, while Cougar Energy's 400MW power project will be fuelled by underground coal gasification. The 400MW Wandoan proposal by GE Energy, comprising US conglomerate General Electric, Switzerland-based miner Xstrata and Queensland state-owned utility Stanwell, would be the world's first integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) power plant incorporating 90pc CCS, according to GE. It is expected to be ready by early 2016.

The three projects have each applied for funding from the Australian government's CCS flagship programme. CCS projects rely heavily on government funding for building pilot projects.
