Stora Enso invites media to viewing of Opcon Powerbox for production of green electricity On 7 September, Stora Enso, a world leader in sustainable forestry included on the Global 100 list of the world's most sustainable companies, is inviting the media to view its activities within industry-integrated renewable energy. The Nordic region's first industry-integrated site for renewable energy is currently being created at Stora Enso's pulp mill in Skutskär, Sweden, and Opcon Powerbox is a key element. Opcon Powerbox, an innovative new product for carbon-free production of electricity from waste and surplus heat from Opcon, the energy and environmental technology Group, will enable Stora Enso's Skutskär mill to produce more than 4,000 MWh of electricity from 70°C surplus heat that the mill was previously unable to exploit. This will mean a saving of over 3,000 tons of carbon, corresponding to the total annual consumption of 500 Swedes. Waste water at the mill will also be cooled, which will reduce the mill's requirement for electricity otherwise needed for cooling. Net production corresponds to half of the amount of electricity produced by one large wind power plant (2 MW) while not having to rely on the right weather conditions. "Waste heat has a currently enormous, otherwise unexploited, global potential. If we are to succeed in reducing emissions then more companies must start working proactively with energy efficiency, like Stora Enso are doing, and utilise the energy they have already used. Opcon Powerbox provides attractive, carbon-free electricity generation using waste heat at low temperatures. This is something completely new," says Rolf Hasselström, President and CEO of Opcon AB. Opcon Powerbox, 0.74 MW in standard form, can be installed in large process plants, power plants, on large diesel engines or on large ships. Opcon Powerbox utilises waste heat to produce electricity from a source that would otherwise be wasted. Waste heat has enormous, largely unutilised potential. According to the American Energy Department there is more waste and surplus heat available in American industry than electricity production from all renewable energy sources in the US combined.
