CEO's Responsibilities: "Please no pleading innocence by being ignorant"!
Duties & Responsibilities of a CEO By Jagg Xaxx, eHow Contributor
A CEO is often the public face of a corporation. A CEO, or chief executive officer, is the top position in a corporation. The CEO oversees the CFO (chief financial officer), CIO (chief information officer) and CTO (chief technology officer). In most companies, CEOs bear a huge amount of responsibility for the success or failure of the company and are compensated very well to reflect this. Other People Are Reading Duties of Managing Directors The Difference Between a CFO & a CEO Responsibilities Whether or not a CEO actually has a plaque on his desk reading, "The buck stops here," the fact is that it does. When mistakes are made or disasters happen within a company -- even if they are not the CEO's fault and even if he knew nothing about them -- he is ultimately responsible for them. This is because the CEO is the figurehead of the company and is responsible for anticipating problems and for creating a mode of operation and a corporate culture that should avoid problems before they begin. The responsibilities of a CEO thus extend throughout the company.
Duties According to business expert Stever Robbins, the two primary duties of a CEO are putting together a senior management team and setting the tone and direction of the corporate culture. Employees will naturally look to senior management, particularly the CEO, for cues about what is expected of them. Each corporation functions in a different way, and the level of formality, social expectations, intensity of work and extent of cooperation can all be influenced by the actions and attitudes of the CEO. In a more formal sense, the CEO engages in corporate strategy building by consulting with senior management teams about what directions the company should take, where it should put its money and effort and how much risk it is willing to undergo in the pursuit of future gain.

The CEO is usually the highest-paid employee within a corporation and usually augments her official income in a major way through benefits, perks, stock options and yearend bonuses. Other advantages include a stimulating and exciting work environment, the opportunity to work closely with accomplished and motivated people, frequent travel to exotic destinations, social status and the chance to be a major player in the development of a successful enterprise.
Drawbacks Particularly when there are problems or crises in the company, CEOs can sometimes work very long hours under extremely stressful conditions. If a company suffers losses or goes bankrupt, the CEO can be held responsible by shareholders and the public. Although she will not be personally responsible because of the legal organization of a corporation, she may experience alienation and social censure for "losing" the company. Other drawbacks may include overwork, lack of time with family or pursuing other interests, and loss of a sense of self as it is subsumed into the company.
