I've been trading ETF CFD for some time now and I use IG exclusively.
What I do is find an ETF that is linked to the main market and is at it's possible lowest point eg. a short or inverse. BIS is a good example. Little downside and plenty of air above. JNUG and NUGT are other examples but I'll wait till early next year to buy them at what I consider their lowest point. I won't buy until I think there is volatility coming or a market is turning.
If you want to buy and sell gold ETFs you're possibly better off with short dated options. More bang for your buck with a much smaller margin.
I don't buy ETFs and plan to hold for a long time as there is the contango effect and holding costs to consider but there are quite a few trading angles around to keep me busy.
I have been attempting to discuss ETF periodically but it seemed that no one knew much about the product.
