All democratic countries will stand on their own two feet, but no one can do without each other, so it is a matter of finding each other, without curtailing the need for self-determination and continuing to call themselves allies.
Now Greenland has served its bid on what Greenland wants in the foreign field as well as in the field of defense and security.
Naalakkersuisoq for Independence and Foreign Affairs, Vivian Motzfeldt (S) is happy that almost all parties have chosen to take responsibility for the country's policy in this area:
- This is how it is in a democratic society, I would have liked to see all parties in Inatsisartut agree on the strategy, but one party has not been able to see itself in the strategy, and we must respect that.
- But four out of five parties, and which have a very broad majority behind them, have chosen to help take responsibility in relation to the country's foreign, security and defense policy strategy, and I am quite satisfied with that, because I feel it is a strong and solid foundation that we have designed together, explains Vivian Motzfeldt.
Denmark and other allies have been consulted
It is no secret that it is the state that is responsible for most of the expenses in foreign, security and defense policy matters, just as it is the state that is responsible for the enforcement of sovereignty in the Arctic.
With increased responsibility for the areas, it must also mean that Greenland itself must bear a greater and greater part of the burden, including the human resources that must ensure the implementation of the political objectives, Greenland can afford it with the very small population and the small economy of the country have available?
- First of all, I must emphasize that this strategy we have presented was written by the country's own population, but of course we have respect for our partners, especially the USA, Canada and Iceland and not least Denmark, which is why we have consulted them in connection with the preparation of the strategy, because if we sincerely want to cooperate, it is also important to hear the countries we would like to cooperate with, emphasizes Vivian Motzfeldt to Sermitsiaq.AG.
Economic dependence on a single country is not feasible
For several centuries, Greenland has been dependent on cooperation with Denmark, both economically and structurally.
Naalakkersuisoq for independence and foreign affairs, Vivian Motzfeldt believes that the country should now seek a way out of that dependence, and this without damaging the relationship between the countries:
- For many years, we have been deeply dependent on the economic, commercial, foreign and security conditions. We have reached a stage where we can see that the bottom line has not borne fruit and given us the financial independence.
- It is therefore time that we must now look for other opportunities to make our country both politically and economically independent, therefore it is no secret that we want to expand trade relations with our close allies, who are also our neighboring countries, namely the USA , Canada and Iceland.
What if Denmark wants to cut ties with Greenland?
There have been very clear voices in Greenland that Greenland is seriously working to become a politically and economically independent country, and the process is being set in motion. But even though it is probably a hypothetical question, we asked Motzfeldt to consider what will happen if Denmark decides to throw in the towel:
- I believe that we should not deal with this issue, I would rather focus on the good cooperation we have today, and I must emphasize that we have good negotiations on defense and security matters between the countries.Denmark knows very well what Greenland wants, and Denmark knows very well that if we want economic independence from Denmark, then it is imperative that we look for alternative ways, because regardless of what happens, our cooperative relations between Greenland and Denmark will continue .We have worked together for many years, but we want a more equal collaboration in the future, concludes Naalakkersuisoq for independence and foreign affairs, Vivian Motzfeldt.
