I wrote to Etrade saying I wanted compensation for the recent meltdown....this is how they replied

Thank you for your email. We apologize for the delay in our response.
The scheduled maintenance and the move to Melbourne were interlinked and have contributed, however work was done over the weekend to bulk up the systems and we should see a return to full performance this week.
As a gesture of goodwill I have allocated 1 free trade to your account which is valid for 2 months from today. Please accept our apologies for the recent website performance issues, we are working overtime to restore the service to it's full level.
