It's easy to overlook the significance, in marketing terms, of the sheer size and grade at Balama. The recent update of Ore Reserves (25 March) shows that the deposit (as currently measured) contains about 147 million tonnes of graphite, at a grade about twice as good as most of its wannabee competitors. That means that the mine could produce for more than 400 years at the current rate - without any further exploration of the neighbouring parts of their lease.

The real significance of this is that Balama could vastly increase production if needed, at a lower marginal cost than virtually anyone else - and now the whole world knows it (well, the financial world, anyway!). As a result -

- Where will be the first port of call for graphite, for any of the major battery makers now rushing to build plants, and needing an assured graphite source?
- How hard will it be for any competitor to get funding?

That leaves a big question unresolved. In the current climate of takeover activity in the battery minerals area, how are SYR investors to get the benefit of this position?

It's time for Syrah management to start beating the drum. The market is both less polite and more ruthless. This year, being polite and coy is probably not going to cut it.
