The U.S. is smart in this regard. The U.S. is thinking 20-30 years down the road. Their strategic reserves(enough oil to fight a small war) hold enough oil to manipulate the price of oil if they wish. They have even done so from to time, short term. When they finally stop bickering and build the pipeline from Canada, the U.S. will control more oil then any other nation in the world. The U.S will be the largest producer of energy by 2020 at the latest and some are saying it could happen as soon as 2017. And yet we are still the number two importer of foreign oil. Smart if you ask me. Energy is power as we just saw with Russia.
