If I can just correct the premise of your sentiment as BMW has already formed a contract with Livent for America.
BMW is most definitely on the brink of forming a contract to offtake European Lithium's end product. Mr Wanke indicated all of what the Wolfsberg project can produce... it's just a matter of forming a contract now, which takes effort to determine cost, commercial terms and agreements. Ask BMW directly, they don't deny it.
Agreed however, the fact BMW does not want to make their own batteries. But they most certainly want to control the supply chain, most especially the source of raw materials as it is within their interest (limited supply) and in fact company ESG policy to do so (it's on their website).
Also a quick reminder that even if all current prospective lithium sources start production year 2025, is still not enough supply to meet exponentially increasing demand. Further, a quick reminder of Austrian Govt's Masterplan Rohstoffe 2030.
