In searching for ARU’s releases on phosphate I found last year’s article on the gold mine, which I had forgotten about. Mt Porter seems to be on Aboriginal land but has traditional owners’ approval to mine through the NLC, thus meeting ALRA requirements. I believe there are some problems with agreements for ARU to use the nearby existing crushing plant that will delay a June 2005 opening.

Gold mine in the offing

A new Territory gold mine is expected to begin operations within six months.
An agreement between traditional owners and Territory-based Arafura Resources NL has opened the door for mining to begin at Mt Porter, in the Pine Creek region about 150km south east of Darwin.
Northern Land Council deputy chief executive John Berto said an environmental report would need to be done. Mining could start on the 350ha site by the middle of next year.
