Good informative post SR although it is important to point out that although they are growing fast BYD EV sales outside China are still only small compared with Tesla and others. However when it comes to batteries BYD, CATL and other Chinese manufacturers are the dominant force, although there are plenty of plans and factories under construction I think Tesla are one of the few large battery manufacturers outside China. Its a similar story with battery minerals, although they are mined all over the world many of the mines have Chinese funding and the majority of the raw material processing is currently done in China.
Very few would doubt Europes desire to manufacture the most important and expensive single component of EVs but they have to be competitive economically. Europes recently announced tariffs may give them some breathing space on the cost competitive front with China and it stands a good chance of being successful in the short term but tariffs should not be relied on for the long term. The only long term solutions for economic competitiveness are economies of scale, cost of raw materials and a good product. China has a decent head start on all of those.
