Pumped Hydro is a great alternative. Just getting enough scale is an issue & in enough states also.
Snowy mountain on steriods, with a solar pump facility would be a better solution than most other renewable, with the dam being the battery.
Redflow batteries for example are another (vanadium--not Li ion) covering acres & acres of useless land would be another alternative, much higher return for the dollars over time due to number of cyclescost factor. However these need to be of a scale not yet being constructed.
Bill gates is spend ,on research for burning the waste material fro N power plants. reduces the waste by up to 90%.
NIMBY is exactly the issue in Australia & unfortunately political suicide with the irrational greens holding way too much policital sway..but that democracy for you
. Hence why the correct decision can only be achieved in a country like China.
