SteveSage, re your point about immigration levels, it remains politically sensitive as many electors don't like increased immigration as they perceive it puts more pressure on roads and urban rail in major cities, especially Sydney and Melbourne.
This is from 'AFR' on Wednesday 30 March 2022:
"...Returning foreign students and close to 200,000 skilled migrants a year are expected to offset a national brain drain as international borders reopen, which should partly placate businesses screaming out for imported labour.
Treasury expects Australians to resume their age-old trend of heading overseas for work opportunities after two years of being stuck at home, ending a historically rare period in which the number of permanently returning citizens jumped.
Net overseas migration has been revised for 2021-22 from about minus 40,000 to plus 41,000, rising to 180,000 in 2022-23 and 213,000 in 2023-24..."
