Yes, while Toyota has their alternative hydrogen fuel cell technology and not playing the same rules of the game, not China, Western car makers don't have an alternative. Their alternative is hybrid and ICE but that is not exactly going forwards.
The tariffs are going to make them more backwards, 'protecting' them is making them more behind, like doing your kids essays so they get good grades, 'helping' them in a wrong way that would ruin them.
At least the German auto makers can rely on their branding to stay relevant in the high end niche makes.
