In the film I mentioned Nash gets hints from pigeons foraging ( compare them to seagulls which fight and get in each other's way much like 6 blokes all trying to get the blonde and failing so it is better if they ignore the blonde and go for the other still attractive 'targets' and all succeed ) and takes the mathematics from there to more complex stuff for his thesis.
