As of August 2024, the Tesla Model Y continues to dominate China’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) market, with year to date sales reaching 289,400 units, marking a 3.9 per cent year-on-year increase.
Following closely is BYD’s Seagull, with 249,500 units sold, a 194.1 per cent growth from last year. Other top-selling models include BYD’s Yuan+, with 171,500 units, a 12.3% decline YoY, and Qin+ with 106,700 units, up 61.4% YoY.
Tesla’s Model 3, however, declined to sell 80,400 units in the first eight months of the year, reflecting a 18.2 per cent year-on-year decrease. Meanwhile, BYD’s Dolphin and Han models experienced significant drops, with sales falling by 51.4 per cent and 20.6 per cent, respectively.
While Chinese EV brands continue to see strong growth, non-Chinese brand are struggling to keep pace.
Only Volkswagen ID.3 made it into the rankings with 55,100 units, representative of the challenges faced by international brands to maintain their product competitiveness in China, a market increasingly dominated by local manufacturers.
According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the country’s NEV market set a new record in August, with 19 automakers achieving monthly wholesale sales of over 10,000 units.
