In the 1950s ~ 1970s any companies diversified both horizontally and vertically. They did this to control supply Sales channels and semi competitive products. All of this was suppose to increase profits. It worked great at first. then internal political problems slowly showed cracks.

GM spent years pulling everything under one umbrella they caved to divisional infighting and have spent years diversifying many of the supply divisions they set.
