This is a common brownie myth. Measures on % houses with solar PV show that the biggest penetration is in the poorer suburbs. In Sydney there are more in the western than the eastern suburbs. In Perth the highest uptake is in relatively poor Forrestfield but low in wealthy City Beach.

Just driving around should be enough to show this but if in doubt just look at sat photos and count.

My personal belief is that poorer folk like to reduce electricity bills whereas the rich don't give a toss. As a pensioner, that was my main reason for getting solar PV.
