Tbh TR, I believe that Toyota definitely knows which way the wind is blowing! It's just that they want to keep producing engines rather than switching all of the plants quickly to "electric motors". It's all about keeping the lights on at their factories with the legacy technology and delaying take up of EVs to optimise their profits or perhaps limit losses.
Imo it's a folly to not transit to EVs with as much haste as possible as their global market share of auto manufacturing is otherwise going to go to the toilet!
