From my research so far the two points that you have mentioned do appear to be the biggest possible drawbacks.
Supposedly, they stop working at about 85% humidity. I am unsure as to what the humdity mught be here. I do live on a river and I am not sure if that would impact the humidity. We are North of Sydney. I know that these units are very popular in Central NSW and Adelaide (both have very dry heat). I supsect that Sydney itself may have a high humidity.
Re the leaving windows open thing. Security is not an issue here. Our main concern would be bugs getting in. We habe little midgeys that eben get in through the fly screen. Although I do wonder if the air flow outwards would help with this. It must ne quite a big airflow as they say the entire house gets changed every 2 minutes.
