a lot of sentiment and blanket bans come in because a lot of miners, drillers and the like acted and still act if allowed like an ill mannered, obnoxious bunch of bastards who think they own the world
there was an article on wind farms the other day - in Oz from memory - and, it was said that it was different now, but, memories lingered from drillers coming up driveways unannounced and started work
now - there's consultation etc etc.
so, with such practices in the old days - is it any wonder why people get pissed off and arc up about entire industries.
from my experience - leaseholders in Oz seem to think that they own whatever it is that they have a lease on to do whatever -
be it mining, grazing, O&G, or keeping bees--------------- they don't - it's as simple as that
it's a lack of respect for others - a very Oz characteristic - one that eventually bites one on the bum
