Yeah but paul, as everyone's saying, the compacts just don't last! That's why we're whinging. Much more likely to break one when you replace them every three to six months. The tubes in the garage are 20 years old.
The old tungsten filaments lasted a lot longer, were cheaper to manufacture in energy and material terms and weren't a hazard for recycling.
Our quarterly power bill just came in at $108. And that's with a dozen of the tungsten downlights, a few of the old tungsten "ordinaries" and yes, a few fluoros. No big deal - back to tungsten or LEDs for us.
