Around 1972, I was cab driving part time for a guy in Melbourne who had 4x cabs. The plates were originally issued by Melbourne City Council for about 20 pounds each he said. If he was alive now he would be around 110 - so lets say the plates went to his estate. Value, lets say $1.2M. When I pay for a cab ride now I know where half the money is going - feeding the plate finance co or lessor? Licenses for anything (lobsters, taxis, abalone) should be HANDED BACK when the user leaves the industry!
