Finally, the Dorado operation involves Santos and partner Carnarvon Energy in shallow 90 m-deep water off Port Hedland, a completely new precinct for the industry. Environmental approvals have yet to arrive and, according to Carnarvon, costs are currently too high, notably for the FPSO which accounts for the lion’s share of the total budget. At last report, the partners were working with the builder, Singapore’s Sembcorp Marine, so it can be adapted for Pavo North, a recent discovery with 43M barrels of oil.
“Everyone’s waiting with bated breath on Dorado,” Mr Edgar told delegates. “I imagine they will be in a rush to get it done.”
