Well could it be the fact that the so called "financial system" is bankrupt, morally, financially and fiscally ??
Or could it be that the political system is exactly the same.
Or could it be because of the covid plandemic.
Or even the war against gold by the ruling class.
Or even a myriad of other reasons but there are plenty of facades out there that wouldn't withstand a prod of a finger, even lightly.
To say that gold has "no intrinsic value above a point of supply and demand" sounds a bit like gibberish especially given that the gold price is certainly not set by supply and demand fundamentals.
In regards to Rickards, He would appear to be more of an institutionalist with a general populistic approach.
If Russia wanted to buy more gold without being "seen" then they wouldn't have a problem, in the same way the Chinese operate.
