"The child should be free to select the information they require"
How would they know what information they require? Students currently don't do this until they are postgrads - when they are expected to contribute new knowledge.

    Indeed.

Right now, most teenagers hold in the hands access to an incredible amount of knowledge, freely available - more so than at any other time in history.

The Gutenberg Project has open source books covering every subject going back hundreds of years.
Wikipedia - not the best academic source I grant you, but the references it gives at the bottom of articles link to many academic works that are freely available.
They can read the actual codebase and contribute directly to one of the most used pieces of software on the planet - Linux - which is also for free.

With no more than the device in their hands, they could become experts on any language, history, art, science and engineering if they chose.

What do they spend their time with this device ? Mostly various shades of pink pixels, selfies and music. Which is why we have flat-earthers and anti-science people everywhere.
