I don't think it is so much that religion has been sidelined but the people running it have lost a lot of power

Just think -- Priests would not allow a lot of people to read and write, or how to make copper, or knowledge of any of the sciences, solely because they were the only ones who knew so that gave them power and riches

We also have many closed area's in our society where knowledge is hidden, the internet has changed a lot
