One of the biggest problems with all hybrids from an efficiency point of view is that every time you go from one type of energy to another some is lost. If hydrocarbons have been burnt to make rotational kinetic energy it is better to put that down to pushing a vehicle along a road than converting it to electric potential energy and back to rotational energy later on. Now there are advantages with constant loading of a smaller ICE and the regen braking of an EV but they are outweighed by the added complexity of two drive systems and their extra weight.

Unfortunately you are correct about the mindset of the majority, that combined with the marketing power of Toyota will ensure that the worlds transition to full EV will take much longer than it should. EVs will never suit everyone and ICE will still have some market share way into the future but hybrids are not the answer for the majority. The best thing hybrids do is illustrate how Toyota's marketing power can take advantage of human insecurity.
