Not to sure about the nuclear bit for Australia, thorium might work however fusion has the most potential, unfortunately it is still decades away with the current rate of progress. IMO in the short term keep a bit of coal, have some gas on standby and wind up the wind, solar, hydro and batteries, especially V2X.
